Die Podiumsdiskussion AND THERE ARE MANY STORIES MORE TO TELL beschäftigt sich mit der Entstehung von Narrativen und mit der Frage, von wem, auf welche Weise und mit welchem Ziel Geschichten erzählt werden.
Indem anhand von Themen und Charakteren des Stücks CYPRESSENBURG aktuelle Kontexte und Diskurse beleuchtet werden, untersucht dieses zweiteilige Format, wie es Künstler*innen der DACH-Region in der Kulturszene und Unterhaltungsindustrie „schaffen“ können. Geladene Expert*innen, Meinungsbildner*innen und Produktionsbeteiligte werden in einer Diskussionsveranstaltung die zentralen Fragestellungen des Stücks vertiefen.

This play will have regular Burgtheater-goers shook in their Saisonkarte seats!
Cypressenburg is the contemporary political theatre Vienna deserves. Part musical, part political satire and revealing the new challenges for art posed by socially engaged (social) media, this play is a timely mirror held up to the Austrian theatre industry.
Playing with Austrian archetypes and stereotypes - think “The Sound of Music”, grantige Wiener Kaffeehauskultur but also think German-speaking theatrical traditions such as Nestroy and Schiller - this play gives a refreshing take on Austria’s history of diversity and its incessant denial and dismissal of the plurality of its present-day population. After all, where do those Alpine Austrians hail from, if not the Africans migrating with Hannibal? LOL!
Performances are stellar. Si-Pho (MING) switches between classic and contemporary compositions beautifully whilst critiquing the “token Asian” narrative, Sal O’Myè (Safira Robens) challenges the wishy-washy wokeness of Titus Fox (Moses Leo) who quickly drops his Black Power pride to embody a “white” lie. Carl Carl and Ignatia "Cypress" Cypressenburg (played by the brilliant Ernest Allan Hausmann and Zeynep Buyraç) embody the perfect sticky “situationship” and offer clever comic relief. A brilliant pull by costume designer Mariama Sow showcases the talent of local fashion designer and creative director AMAAENA who defines dressing as a political act and whose work ties in so well to the set and setting.
With Cypressenburg, critical theatre meets surreal fiction and uncomfortable truths and all played out poetically on stage. What is “white-facing” anyway and who exactly needs to “go back to” where exactly, in a country which threatens its own racialised inhabitants with remigration? Cypressenburg offers the above and more up for discussion.
TONICA HUNTER
Tonica Hunter (she/they) ist eine Kuratorin, Dozentin und DJ, die ursprünglich aus London stammt und seit 2014 in Wien lebt. Tonicas Arbeit umfasst die Bereiche Kuration (Musik, Performance, Diskurs, visuelle Medien), Forschung und Lehre mit dem Schwerpunkt Kunst und soziale Gerechtigkeit. Tonica arbeitete bereits für und mit Institutionen und Organisationen wie die Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst (MDW), die Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien (Angewandte), Ars Electronica, Weltmuseum, Wellenklænge, Wiener Festwochen, Youki Film Festival, Österreichisches Museum für Schwarze Unterhaltung und Black Music, Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Tanzquartier Wien – artistic research lab und UNESCO Österreich, nur um einige zu nennen. Seit 2021 sitzt sie im Beirat der Frauendomäne als Expertin für Kunst und Kultur und im Beirat der Kulturinitiativen des Bundesministeriums für Kunst, Kultur, Öffentlichen Dienst und Sport (BMKÖS).
